Benefits of Oral Surgery

Oral surgery can have many benefits for one's oral health. We only recommend surgery when it's absolutely necessary and only as a last resort. As a holistic, biological dentist, we always exhaust all of our options starting with the least invasive options. Here are some benefits of having oral surgery.
Relieves Pain
Oral surgery can help alleviate chronic pain and discomfort caused by impacted wisdom teeth, infections or jaw misalignment. Surgery can also prevent future complications and improve overall oral health.
Enhances Function
Oral surgery can significantly improve your ability to eat, speak and live comfortably. Corrective jaw surgery can improve bite alignment, while dental implants can restore full chewing function after tooth loss.
Improves Appearance
Many oral surgery procedures can enhance your facial appearance and smile aesthetics. Corrective jaw surgery can improve facial symmetry, while dental implants provide a natural-looking tooth replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

After oral surgery, it is important to follow your dentist or oral surgeon’s instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and avoid complications, as these steps are designed to promote recovery and minimise discomfort or risks such as infection or dry socket.

Immediately after surgery, you should bite down gently on gauze placed over the surgical site to control bleeding and allow a clot to form, replacing the gauze as needed, and avoid rinsing, spitting or using a straw for at least 24 hours to prevent dislodging the clot.

It is recommended to stick to soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce or soup during the first few days and to avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the surgical site or cause discomfort. Keeping your head elevated while resting can help reduce swelling, and applying an ice pack to the outside of your face in 15-minute intervals may also alleviate swelling and discomfort.

Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing gently around the surgical area and rinsing with a saltwater solution after the first 24 hours, and avoid smoking or using tobacco products, as these can significantly impair healing.

How to Prepare for Oral Surgery

Before undergoing oral surgery, you'll have an initial consultation with our team at Mitcham Central Dental. This is your chance to discuss your concerns, ask questions, and understand the treatment plan.

Pre-Operative Instructions

Our team will provide you with pre-operative instructions. This may include fasting before the procedure, avoiding certain medications and arranging for a responsible adult to accompany you home post-surgery.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

So, you just had oral surgery at Mitcham Central Dental, and now it's time to focus on recovery. Here's what you need to know:

Recovery Time

Recovery time can vary depending on the type of oral surgery you had. Generally, you can expect some pain and swelling for a few days, with full recovery taking anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Managing Pain and Discomfort

Pain and discomfort after oral surgery are about as welcome as a rainy day on a picnic. Mitcham Central Dental will likely provide you with pain medication to help manage any discomfort. Follow their instructions on when and how to take it. Don't be a hero – pain relief is your friend during this time.

Dietary Recommendations

Eating can be a bit tricky after oral surgery, especially if you're feeling like a chipmunk with your cheeks all puffed up. Stick to soft foods like soups, smoothies and mashed potatoes. Avoid crunchy or spicy foods that could irritate the surgical site. And remember, no straws, as they can cause complications.
